Cosmetic mirrors in hotel rooms: magnification, lighting and mounting
A cosmetic mirror is one of those details guests never praise and always miss. The moment someone needs to put on make-up, shave or insert contact lenses, its absence is obvious — and it lands in the review.
Below: which magnification to choose, when LED backlighting is worth it, and where to place the mirror so it actually works.
A cosmetic mirror is one of the cheapest items of hotel bathroom equipment that measurably raises guest satisfaction. Together with the hair dryer it forms the pair guests look for first.
Which magnification?
- 3× — the universal choice for standard rooms, comfortable even for guests who wear glasses,
- 5× — suited to wellness and premium rooms where guests expect precision,
- 7× and above — specialist use only; the image blurs quickly unless the guest holds an exact distance.
For most properties, 3× magnification is the safest choice. Higher figures look good in a catalogue but are harder to use in practice.
Wall-mounted or free-standing?
A wall-mounted mirror with a swing arm saves counter space, cannot be carried off and looks professional. It does require drilling into tile and a solid substrate.
A table mirror is flexible and works well in rooms with a large vanity or in apartments with a dressing table. The downsides are damage and guests moving it around. Both versions are in the cosmetic mirrors category.
Lighting: when does LED pay off?
- colour temperature — 4000 K is neutral and closest to daylight,
- power supply — battery models are cheaper to install but create recurring work for housekeeping; hard-wired units are more reliable operationally.
LED backlighting makes the biggest difference where general bathroom lighting is weak or comes from above and casts shadows on the face.
What to watch for in a humid room
- IP44 rating or better if the mirror sits near the shower,
- stainless or powder-coated arm — chromed plastic goes dull in steam,
- a joint with enough friction so the mirror does not droop after a few months,
- anchoring into a load-bearing wall, not just into grout.
Where to mount it
The ideal spot is the wall beside the basin at 160–170 cm from the floor, with the arm reaching over the counter. In a small bathroom, position it so that the folded mirror does not intrude into the space between the basin and the door.
The Hotelstars Union classification treats the cosmetic mirror as a higher-category feature — in four- and five-star hotels it is expected as standard.
Frequently asked questions
What magnification is best for a hotel cosmetic mirror?
Three times. It is enough for make-up and shaving and stays comfortable for most guests.
Is LED lighting necessary?
Not mandatory. It pays off in bathrooms with weak or ceiling-only lighting that casts facial shadows.
Wall-mounted or table mirror?
Wall-mounted with a swing arm for standard rooms; table mirrors for apartments and rooms with a dressing table.
At what height should the mirror be mounted?
Usually 160–170 cm above the floor, beside the basin, so the arm reaches over the counter.
Will the mirror survive steam?
Yes, if you choose a model rated at least IP44 with a metal rather than chromed plastic arm.
