Hotel bath mats: how to choose size, weight and slip resistance
A bath mat is a cheap item, but it is one of the first things a guest touches with bare feet. Get the size or the weight wrong and it shows immediately: a wet floor, a slippery tile and a line in the review.
This article covers how to choose a hotel bath mat — size, GSM weight, material, slip resistance — and how many pieces per room you really need.
Among hotel textiles, the bath mat is one of the cheapest items, yet also one of the most frequently washed and fastest to wear out. That is exactly why it deserves the same attention as your hotel towels.
Which size should you choose?
- 50 × 70 cm — the standard for regular bathrooms with a shower,
- 60 × 90 cm — the comfortable size next to a bathtub and in superior rooms,
- 40 × 60 cm — a secondary mat by the basin or for small bathrooms.
The rule is simple: the mat has to cover the area the guest steps onto immediately after leaving the bath or shower. Anything smaller and the water ends up on the tiles.
GSM weight: how heavy is heavy enough?
- up to 500 gsm — the economy option, dries fast but flattens sooner,
- 600–750 gsm — the most common hotel standard, a good balance of absorbency and laundry turnaround,
- above 800 gsm — a premium feel, longer drying times and higher laundry cost.
If you run an in-house laundry, the middle band is usually optimal: higher weight extends the drying cycle and with it your energy bill.
Slip resistance: when is it necessary?
An anti-slip backing makes sense anywhere the floor is smooth tile — which is most hotel bathrooms. It matters most in wellness areas, pool changing rooms and rooms designed for older guests.
One caveat: most anti-slip coatings do not tolerate high drying temperatures. If your laundry dries above 60 °C, choose a heavier terry mat without a coating instead.
White or coloured?
White bath mats can be washed with the rest of your white linen and chlorinated, which suits properties with a central laundry. Coloured bath mats look presentable for longer, hide small stains better and let you match the bathroom to the rest of your textiles — but they need a separate wash cycle.
How many pieces per room?
The proven ratio is 3 pieces per room: one in the room, one in the laundry, one on the shelf. With high occupancy or a slower laundry, plan for 4. Fewer than three means mats go back into rooms damp, and their lifespan drops sharply.
The Hotelstars Union classification expects a mat at the bath or shower from four stars upward; at three stars it is simply good practice.
Frequently asked questions
What is the best bath mat size for a hotel?
50 × 70 cm is the most universal. Next to a bathtub or in superior rooms, 60 × 90 cm works better.
What GSM weight is ideal for a hotel bath mat?
600–750 gsm — absorbent enough for the guest and still reasonable for the laundry.
How often should a bath mat be changed?
For stays longer than two nights, usually every second day; always between guests.
Does the anti-slip backing survive washing?
Yes, at wash temperatures up to 60 °C and lower drying heat. High temperatures damage the coating.
How many bath mats should I order per room?
Three per room as a minimum, four if occupancy is high all year.
