Laundry carts and linen bags in hotel housekeeping
Dirty linen is a continuous flow in a hotel: every room produces several kilos of textiles a day. How housekeeping collects and moves it decides both cleaning speed and floor hygiene.
This article covers how to choose a laundry cart and linen bags, which capacity to pick, and how to set up colour coding.
The laundry cart is the core of your housekeeping and waste management kit. Together with the cleaning cart it determines how many rooms an attendant can finish per shift.
Which capacity?
- up to 150 l — for smaller guesthouses and floors with a handful of rooms,
- 200–300 l — the usual hotel standard for one floor,
- above 300 l — for large properties and central linen collection.
A practical rule: one room, after a full bed and towel change, takes up roughly 15–20 litres. A 300-litre cart therefore covers about fifteen rooms before it has to be emptied.
Frame with a bag, or a solid tub?
A frame with a fabric bag is light, manoeuvres well and the bag itself can be washed. Ideal for corridors and lifts.
A plastic or metal tub is easier to disinfect and takes rough handling better. It suits the basement, the laundry and loading.
Most hotels settle on a combination: laundry carts with bags on the floors and durable tubs for transport to the laundry.
Colour coding pays off
- white — bed linen and white towels,
- blue or grey — coloured textiles and bathrobes,
- red — heavily soiled or infectious linen going into a separate cycle.
Colour coding is also language-neutral, which is an advantage in international teams.
Hygiene and safe handling
- fill bags to two-thirds at most — beyond that they cannot be lifted safely,
- never put dirty linen on the room floor or on clean linen on the cart,
- disinfect the cart at least weekly and wash the bags on a fixed cycle,
- on housekeeping carts, keep the clean and dirty zones physically separate.
Frequently asked questions
What laundry cart capacity is best for a hotel?
200–300 litres for one floor, which covers roughly 10–15 rooms.
How many laundry carts does a hotel need?
Usually one per floor plus a spare for transport to the laundry.
Is colour coding of bags worth it?
Yes. It shortens laundry time and reduces the risk of damaging coloured textiles.
How often should linen bags be washed?
Weekly as a rule, twice a week at high occupancy.
Can a laundry cart be used for waste?
Not advisable. Use waste collectors and containers to avoid cross-contamination.
