Hotel towel GSM guide: 400, 500 or 600 g/m²

For most three- and four-star rooms, 450-500 g/m² is the working range for towels. Use 400 g/m² for face cloths and 600 g/m² for bath mats and spa areas.

For most three- and four-star rooms the working range is 450-500 g/m²: heavy enough to feel like a hotel towel, light enough to dry in a single laundry cycle. Use 400 g/m² for face cloths and high-turnover leisure areas, and 600 g/m² for bath mats and spa. The full stock range sits in textiles and slippers, with white towels from 200 to 450 g/m².

What does GSM actually measure on a hotel towel?

GSM (g/m²) is the weight of one square metre of finished terry fabric. It is not a quality score and it is not thread count. It tells you how much cotton yarn is in the pile, which in turn drives three things a buyer cares about: absorbency, drying time and laundry weight.

Because GSM is a per-square-metre figure, you can calculate the dry weight of any towel in your inventory before you order. Multiply the area in square metres by the GSM. A 70x140 cm bath towel is 0.98 m², so at 500 g/m² it weighs 490 g dry. That number is the one your laundry contract is priced on.

What does each GSM band weigh in the sizes you actually buy?

This table is pure arithmetic from the GSM figure, so you can check any quotation against it.

GSM30x50 cm face cloth50x100 cm hand towel70x140 cm bath towel100x150 cm bath sheet
400 g/m²60 g200 g392 g600 g

500 g/m²75 g250 g490 g750 g
600 g/m²90 g300 g588 g900 g

The jump from 400 to 600 g/m² adds 196 g to every bath towel. Across a 60-room property with three bath towels per room and three sets in circulation, that is 105 kg of extra textile to buy, wash, dry and store.

Which GSM belongs in which part of the property?

  • 200-300 g/m² - pool and beach loan towels, gym wipe-down towels, back-of-house cloths. Dries fast, replaced often. The 200 g/m² honeycomb towel in 30x50 cm covers the tea-towel and service-area role at 0.83 EUR net.
  • 400 g/m² - face cloths and high-turnover rooms. The 400 g/m² plain white towel in 30x30 cm is 0.93 EUR net and is the cheapest honest face cloth in the range.
  • 450-500 g/m² - the standard room set in three- and four-star city and business hotels. The 450 g/m² plain white hand towel in 50x100 cm is 2.92 EUR net and is the volume item most properties reorder.
  • 600 g/m² and above - bath mats, spa and wellness, suites and long-stay rooms. The 600-650 g/m² bath mat with HOTEL lettering, 50x70 cm is 4.02 EUR net and carries an anti-slip backing.

Note that bath mats and towels follow different logic. A mat is walked on wet, so weight buys slip resistance and recovery, not hand feel. Our separate guide on how to choose hotel bath mats goes through backing types and sizing.

How does GSM change laundry and replacement cost?

Commercial laundry is almost always priced per kilogramme of dry linen. Moving the bath towel from 450 to 600 g/m² raises its dry weight by 147 g, roughly a third. On a property washing 1,500 bath towels a week, that is about 220 kg more per week going through the same contract, plus longer tumble-dry cycles because the heavier pile holds more water.

Against that, heavier terry usually survives more industrial wash cycles before the pile flattens, so the replacement interval stretches. The decision is therefore not "which towel is better" but "which cost line dominates in this property". A 120-room airport hotel with 1.4-night average stays is dominated by laundry throughput, so 450 g/m² wins. A 30-room spa hotel with 4-night stays and a lower wash frequency can carry 600 g/m².

Handling matters as much as fabric weight. Heavier linen loads change trolley capacity and lifting ergonomics on the floor; sizing that properly is covered in our note on hotel laundry carts and bags.

How many towels per room should you stock at each weight?

Room typeFace clothHand towelBath towelBath matSets in circulation
Standard double, city hotel2 x 400 g/m²2 x 450 g/m²2 x 450-500 g/m²1 x 600 g/m²3
Family room4 x 400 g/m²3 x 450 g/m²4 x 450-500 g/m²1 x 600 g/m²3
Spa or wellness suite2 x 450 g/m²2 x 500 g/m²2 x 600 g/m²2 x 600 g/m²4
Pool and gym loan stock--1.5 per lounger, 300 g/m²-3

Three sets in circulation is the practical minimum: one in the room, one in the linen room, one in the wash. Four sets is the number to use if your laundry turnaround exceeds 24 hours or if you hold a seasonal peak.

Which EU rules and certifications apply to hotel towels?

Hotel classification across 22 European countries runs on the shared criteria catalogue of the Hotelstars Union, which sets minimum bathroom textile provision by star rating rather than prescribing a GSM figure. Read the national criteria for the market the property sits in, because the compulsory and optional point split differs by country.

For the fabric itself, the relevant mark is OEKO-TEX STANDARD 100, which tests every component of a textile article against limits for harmful substances. Towels sit in product class 2 (articles with direct skin contact). Ask the supplier for the certificate number and check it rather than accepting a logo on a datasheet.

If you are standardising the whole room at once, the companion pieces are worth doing in the same order so that finishes match - see our guide to choosing hotel hangers.

Frequently asked questions

Is a higher GSM towel always more absorbent?

Up to a point. More pile yarn holds more water, but above roughly 600 g/m² the gain in absorbency per added gram falls off while drying time keeps rising. For room use, 500 g/m² captures most of the benefit.

What GSM do four-star hotels usually specify?

450-500 g/m² for bath and hand towels, 400 g/m² for face cloths and 600 g/m² for the bath mat. Five-star and spa properties move the bath towel to 600 g/m² and the mat to 700 g/m² or higher.

Does GSM drop after the first washes?

Finished terry loses a small amount of weight and shrinks in the first few industrial cycles as sizing and loose fibre wash out. Specify the post-wash size you need, and confirm with the supplier whether the quoted GSM is pre- or post-finishing.

Can I mix GSM weights in the same room?

Yes, and most properties do: a 400 g/m² face cloth with a 450 g/m² hand towel and a 600 g/m² mat is normal. Keep the weight consistent within each item type so that replacements blend with existing stock.

White or coloured towels for a hotel?

White is still the default because it can be bleached and because any single piece can be replaced from stock. Coloured terry suits pool, spa and gym stock where you want the loan towels visually separated from room linen.

How do I check a towel's real GSM on delivery?

Weigh a dry sample and divide by its area in square metres. A 70x140 cm towel is 0.98 m², so a 441 g piece is 450 g/m². A tolerance of about five per cent either way is normal in terry production.

Planning a reorder? Compare weights, sizes and net EUR prices across the full range in textiles and slippers, or start with the white towels listing if you only need to top up the standard room set.
